MPA SEM (Social Economic Mobility)

Bringing together colleagues to look at how we can support people from marginalised economic backgrounds to get a foothold in the sector.

  • Why SEM?

This network will bring together colleagues from within the sector to look at how we can support people from marginalised economic backgrounds to get a foothold into the sector. Social Economic Mobility (SEM) diversity is just as important as other areas. Employers need to be more aware of the importance of social mobility for everyone; not just those from disadvantaged backgrounds but also those who have benefited from privilege. Network members will look at multiple routes into employment (e.g. apprenticeships) that provide suitable pathways for people to get into work, regardless of their background. They will also look at how to overcome biases during recruitment processes.

Supporting social mobility is all about creating pathways for those from disadvantaged backgrounds so they can fulfil their potential. Work experience, education and social mobility are inextricably connected. If we want to reduce inequality, we need to get more people from disadvantaged backgrounds into the workplace and support their learning. The problem is that there are a lot of barriers for those from lower socio-economic backgrounds. More than often, they don’t have the same access to education or preparation for the working world as those from more privileged backgrounds. Social mobility can be improved by creating pathways for those from disadvantaged backgrounds, but it will take time and effort from everyone involved in order to achieve this goal.

  • What is it about and who can join?

The Network is open to all MPA Member employees, including those of us working at the MPA. It is also open to allies.

Please note that any personal information discussed during the meetings is confidential and is not minuted.

  • How is the Network hosted?

The Network is hosted on Microsoft Teams, where members can have conversations on Channels, share files and resources and host meetings online. The Diversity, Equality and Inclusion (DEI) Team are on hand to help, and to take forward any issues raised by the Network. The Microsoft Teams site is a private group and though there is some degree of visibility when you join (other members can see who you are), we request that members maintain strict confidentiality about its membership and contents.

This Network is supported by the MPA DEI team, but it is not our Network: it is yours. We hope that the Network will be led by you for you. We are currently gathering ideas on how members want to run the Network and what you want to get out of it. Colleagues will have the opportunity to contribute in a variety of ways: for example, through Team Meetings online, Channel discussions via Teams, by email or phone.
