The MPA is lending its support to the ‘Make It Fair’ campaign, which calls on the Government to protect the creative industries in the age of generative AI.

The campaign was launched to raise awareness among the British public about the serious threat posed to the creative sector by generative AI models. These models often scrape creative content from the internet without permission, recognition, and, most importantly, without compensating the creators.

The impact on the UK’s music industry—worth over £7.6 billion annually to the economy—could be catastrophic if this issue continues unchecked, or even worse, if the Government legitimises the theft of content.

Today marks the final day of the Government’s consultation on proposed changes to the UK’s gold-standard copyright laws, which would make it easier for AI companies to use British creative content without permission or payment.

The MPA, alongside other members of the Creative Rights in AI Coalition, is advocating for the protection of copyright and for greater transparency from AI companies that rely on it.

Paul Clements, Chief Executive, said: “The UK’s copyright laws are among the best in the world, and they have played a crucial role in fostering growth and creating jobs, not just in music, but across the wider creative economy. Weakening these laws would have a devastating effect on one of the country’s most valuable industries and the livelihoods that depend on it.

Some AI companies are attempting to blur the lines, arguing that full deregulation is necessary for technological advancement. But this simply isn’t true. The greatest opportunities in AI come not from exploiting the hard work of creators, but from innovation and ethical use of content.

We’re urging the British public to support the ‘Make It Fair’ campaign and call on the government to protect copyright. In doing so, we can ensure that both AI and the creative industries can thrive together in a sustainable and fair manner.”

The MPA is calling on its members to join the campaign efforts to safeguard copyright and protect the creative industries. Members can write to their local MP, a template letter and further instructions detailed can be found here.
