NXT-Gen Scholars

What is the NXT Gen Scholars Programme?
The Music Publishers Association (MPA) is a non-profit organisation representing music publishers in the UK. We act on behalf of members ranging from the UK’s largest and most established music publishers to independents and start-ups. These companies support our music makers and drive an extraordinary cultural and economic success story.
The MPA strives to be a catalyst for positive change and encourage a more engaged, conscious, diverse and inclusive music publishing community.
The NXT-Gen Scholars programme, which is free of charge, was created in 2021/22 to nurture the next generation of music publishers, offering a dynamic mix of in-person and online events designed to unravel the mysteries of music publishing profession, providing unparalleled access to publishing communities, networking events and career-building resources.
Inclusion
We understand that it can be difficult for some to join our industry because of numerous factors including social mobility. Musical creativity and potential are not limited to a particular class, region, or school background. Social mobility work in the music publishing industry is important because it helps to create a more inclusive, innovative, and equitable sector. Without targeted efforts, many voices, especially from underrepresented socioeconomic backgrounds remain unheard, which affects creativity, market reach, and fairness. Our NXT Gen Scholars programme work helps tap into a broader talent pool.
The MPA is also a proud Disability Confident Committed employer. Our NXT Gen Scholars programme is ideal for disabled people. Our last 2 cohorts included a number of Scholars who declared a disability. The programme is run mostly online and there are some in person events where support is provided.
What are the benefits of becoming a NXT-Gen Scholar?
Our Scholars will have their own mentor from the industry, access to all MPA training courses, social events, networking opportunities, access to all MPA Employee Networks, one-on-one support from our DEI Team, wellbeing programmes, CV/application writing and interview technique support and review, specialist and technical workshops with guest speakers from our industry.
The programme aligns with the MPA’s pledge to meet the Ten-Point Plan and the Five Ps: Music Industry Action Plan developed by the UK Music’s Diversity Taskforce, to improve diversity and inclusion across the industry (as outlined in the UK Music Diversity Report 2022).
Who can apply
We encourage applications from those in the early stages of their careers (with 0-3 years of experience) who are proactive and driven to make an impact in the music industry and identify as belonging to a marginalised group (from one or more of the 9 protected characteristics. Also, including lower social economic background). The MPA takes an intersectional approach to ensure that we support those facing the most challenges and that no one is left behind.
This programme is ideal for people of any age and for those who are looking at a career change and have always wanted to work in the Music sector or Music Publishing sector.

Work Experience Opportunities
At the heart of a vibrant and diverse music publishing industry lies the responsibility to nurture fresh talent — particularly those whose voices have historically been underrepresented. That’s where the MPA NXT Gen Scholars programme comes in.
This initiative is designed to support individuals in the early stages of their careers who are eager to break into the music publishing sector. Many of these aspiring professionals come from marginalised backgrounds and face systemic barriers that prevent them from accessing the kinds of opportunities others may take for granted.
The NXT Gen Scholars programme offers them crucial support, but their journey can’t stop there.
These scholars are motivated, passionate, and equipped with fresh perspectives. What they need now is a foothold in the industry — and that’s where you come in.
We are calling on MPA members and music publishers to support this talent pipeline by offering:
- Paid or unpaid work placements
- Work experience opportunities
- Entry-level job roles
Even a short-term opportunity could make a huge difference in opening doors and building confidence. By supporting a NXT Gen Scholar, you’ll be contributing to a more inclusive and representative industry and helping to shape the future of music publishing. Let’s work together to ensure that the next generation of talent isn’t just inspired — they’re employed.
If you have any suitable opportunities within your organisation or would like to learn more about the NXT Gen Scholars, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
