On Thursday 6th January, Lucie Caswell, Chief Policy, Rights and Public Affairs Officer, MPA and Viki Smith, Managing Director, PMLL released a joint statement reacting to Ofqual‘s suggestion to suspend music teaching in the event of high staff absences to due the Covid-19 pandemic.

They said: “We are alarmed at Ofqual’s ill-advised suggestion of sidelining music.
Music is essential and fuels achievement at school age, benefiting STEM progress, creative thinking and whole-child development.

Music alleviates today’s serious mental pressures on young people;
it enables expression, connection and confidence.

Do not undermine young progress.

We ask the Department for Education to understand that music is special not elite.”
