The MPA Marks Learning Disability Week: Celebrating Different Ways of Thinking
By DEI Team
Date

From 15–21 June, Learning Disability Week provides an opportunity to celebrate people with learning disabilities, raise awareness and recognise the value of different perspectives, experiences and ways of learning.
This year’s theme, Do You See Me?, encourages us to recognise people with learning disabilities as individuals first. Rather than being defined by assumptions or labels, people should be recognised for their talents, creativity, ambition and contribution.
Learning disabilities affect everyone differently and can influence how a person learns, understands information or develops new skills. Every individual’s experience is unique, and the support they need will vary. Learning disabilities are different from specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia and dyscalculia, although both can affect the way people learn and communicate.
Many people with learning disabilities bring valuable strengths to workplaces, creative environments and communities. These can include resilience, empathy, creativity, visual thinking, problem-solving skills, attention to detail and the ability to approach challenges from a different perspective.
Music publishing thrives on creativity, collaboration and new ideas. Welcoming different ways of thinking can lead to fresh perspectives, stronger conversations and more inclusive decision-making. When people receive the support they need, they are better able to contribute their skills, confidence and creativity.
Learning Disability Week also encourages organisations to consider how they can make their workplaces more accessible and inclusive. Often, small adjustments can make a significant difference. This might include using clear language, sharing information in advance, allowing extra time to process information, providing written summaries after meetings or simply asking colleagues what support would help them participate fully.
Creating an inclusive environment does not mean treating everyone the same. It means recognising that people may need different forms of support to do their best work. By removing barriers and making thoughtful adjustments, we enable more people to contribute with confidence.
The MPA’s AccessAbility Employee Network supports employees across the music publishing sector by raising awareness of disability, accessibility, neurodiversity and intersectional issues. The network provides a space to share experiences, discuss accessibility, exchange good practice and help shape a more inclusive industry. It is open to disabled colleagues, neurodivergent colleagues, people with mental or physical health conditions or impairments and allies.
The theme Do You See Me? invites us to look beyond assumptions and recognise people with learning disabilities as colleagues, creatives, leaders, artists, songwriters, publishers and valued members of our community.
By listening, learning and making thoughtful adjustments, we can help create a music publishing sector where different perspectives are valued, every voice is heard and everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
