Jan 30 2024 Diversity and Inclusion MPA Celebrates LGBT+ History Month 0 shares The theme for 2024 is Medicine – #UnderTheScope LGBT+ History Month is an annual celebration in February in the UK that provides education, awareness and insight into the issues faced by the LGBTQIA+ community and works to combat prejudice against them. The LGBT+ History Month 2024 theme is Medicine – #UnderTheScope, celebrating LGBTQIA+ peoples’ contribution to the field of Medicine and Healthcare both historically and today. This is a chance to showcase the amazing work of LGBTQIA+ staff across the NHS and in other healthcare settings, especially during the pandemic. It is also important to shine a light on the history of the LGBTQIA+ community’s experience of receiving healthcare, which has been extremely complicated, leaving LGBTQIA+ people still facing health inequalities even today. LGBTQIA+ history is often hidden within our society, culture and institutions due to homophobic and transphobic laws of the past, as well as discriminatory and prejudiced attitudes today. We need to uncover and celebrate LGBTQIA+ history whenever we can. It is thanks to the people in the LGBTQIA+ civil rights movement, particularly trans women and people of colour, that we have many of the rights we take for granted today. LGBT History Month is our opportunity to highlight those stories and celebrate their legacy. Would you like to join our BeYOU Employee Network? The MPA is committed to creating a working and learning environment which is inclusive of and accessible to LGBTQIA+ people. We want to ensure that our LGBTQIA+ colleagues are treated with dignity and respect and given the support they need to thrive. We want to listen to and learn from the needs, concerns and experiences of our LGBTQIA+ colleagues and members and take informed action to be more inclusive and supportive. We know that LGBTQIA+ people can face various challenges in the workplace, and this network will help us to address and mitigate them. The Network is open to all MPA Member employees, including those working at the MPA, who identify as LGBTQIA+. It is also open to allies. mpaonline.org.uk/diversity-equality-inclusion/how-to-join-the-mpa-beyou-employee-network/ If you would like to join the network, please contact Helen.
