OUP’s Music Department is one of the world’s leading music publishers, with a strong educational catalogue incorporating major instrumental and classroom titles. It has a world-renowned choral list and a legacy catalogue of classical twentieth- and twenty-first century British and American music.

About the Role
We are seeking an Assistant Editor to join the supportive and vibrant music editorial team in our Academic division. The role will prepare, oversee, and assist with the publication of print and digital sheet music titles, in line with business priorities, according to agreed best practice and established editorial standards.

Key responsibilities in this role will include:

  • Prepare sheet music for publication, copyediting and managing the production process from manuscript to bound copy and ensuring that titles publish on schedule and to budget.
  • Brief and liaise with freelance contributors to ensure timely delivery of outsourced content to required quality and budget.
  • Provide supporting administration and assets for print and digital titles, including briefing covers, writing blurbs, and maintaining accurate specification and scheduling data.
  • Provide project support to the Publishing team, including using music engraving software to prepare performance materials and assisting with proof-stages and composer liaison.
  • Oversee detailed reprint corrections, raised and confirmed by the job-holder or other members of the Publishing team.
  • Oversee the preparation of audio content for publication or promotion.

We operate a hybrid working policy that requires a minimum of 2 days per week in the Oxford office.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have:

Essential:

  • High level of practical musicianship, including keyboard skills and aural ability
  • Understanding of music notation, choral practice, and technique of different orchestral instruments
  • Excellent eye for detail
  • High level of digital literacy and familiarity with music engraving software
  • High level of English and excellent writing skills
  • Good organizational ability
  • Ability to work alone and as part of a team
  • Openness and can-do attitude to learning new skills
  • Ability to adapt, as well as to work fast and under pressure to deadlines

Desirable:

  • In-house editorial experience with a music publisher, including experience of copy-editing and proofing music and text
  • Experience of typographical design
  • Familiarity with the global sheet music market
