Specialist Seminar Speaker Spotlight – Maria Forte

Maria Forte has worked in the music industry for three decades. She began at Virgin Music (Publishers) in the late seventies where she remained until the sale of the Virgin Group to the EMI Group when she left there as General Manager. She joined EMI Music Publishing where she remained for four years as Commercial Affairs Manager running the copyright department as well as establishing the sampling department.

In 1996, she was a co-founder and Director of Commercial Affairs at V2 Music Publishing, Richard Branson’s second venture into music publishing. In 2000 she joined MusicState as Chief Operating Officer. MusicState offered an online source of pre-cleared commercial music for synchronization. She defined and oversaw the launch of this website, creating its template in addition to accompanying systems through which it could operate. She subsequently joined Sanctuary Music Publishing, as Director of Commercial Business where her role included the acquisition of publishing rights, as well as operational responsibilities within the company.

In July 2006 she created her own company, Maria Forte Music Services Ltd, offering consultancy and management services to artists, writers, music firms and music related business. She specializes in rights management and acts in either an advisory or forensic capacity, or on specific projects within this area. Her clients, past and present, include a variety of organizations, businesses, writers or artists:

Amnesty International – for the release of Portishead’s track “Chase The Tear” as well as work on The Secret Policeman’s Balls in 2006, 2008 and the last in 2012 held at Radio City in New York.

Warner Chappell Music – for the implementation of their Pan European Digital Rights Initiative (PEDL);

Jazzie B – in a general consulting role for Jazzie and with Soul II Soul;

David Gedge – from The Wedding Present, Cinerama and his label Scopitones – where she provides business management support to the band and label;

Radiohead – for their commercial digital campaign for “In Rainbows” including their innovative and unprecedented one-stop-shop licensing of the album and related releases of the campaign. She also worked on the digital release of the follow-up album “King Of Limbs” on behalf of the band’s label, Ticker Tape;

Omnifone – a digital multi-territory music subscription service, acquiring licences with rights owners across the publishing marketplace;

Fintage House – where her consultancy included the representation of Fintage Music in the UK as well as acting on their behalf as an IMPEL board member since inception of the Independent Music Publisher e-Music Licensing collective;

Modest! Management – where she oversees the publishing entities for One Direction, Niall Horan and Little Mix as well as ad hoc publishing consultancy activities for their management artists/writers.

Iron Maiden – working closely with their management on their Live Performance income for their world tours.

The Really Useful Group – working within the organisation in relation to their music publishing interests.

Spotify, Netflix, Infectious Music, Parlophone, Freuds, Warner Music, PRS, Dreadzone, Damian Lazarus – have all been shorter term clients to fulfil specific projects.
