The Role
The New Music Editorial Team at Edition Peters is a vital part of its operations and facilitates the performance of works across the world. Reporting to the Group Head of Editorial and Publishing Services, the Senior New Music Editor will be responsible for managing a variety of projects (performance material and publications for sale) to ensure that all material is produced on time, to budget, and in line with company production standards. There is a New Music Editor based in the USA office.

Specific goals:

  • Manage the editing, layout and proof-reading of music and text, commissioning music setting, design, translations and any other services necessary to ensure that the quality of performance and sales material follows the best possible editorial and production standards
  • Work within, review and update the Edition Peters’ Editorial House Style Guide as necessary.
  • Responsible for the release process for publications on the new music editorial schedule (including creation/upload of product metadata, assets, etc as required)
  • Prioritize workloads so that all performance and publication deadlines are met without compromising standards
  • Manage the back-catalogue of contemporary music scores and standard editions
  • Prepare project budgets and track costs against budget
  • Maintain good working relationships with all personnel involved in the editorial and production processes

Personal goals:

  • Keep abreast of trends in the music sector (composers and compositions, performances and performers, other publishers’ work) that could aid the improvement of publishing, production and promotion methods
  • Follow the latest developments in music setting and printing/publishing/digital technologies 

Qualifications and skills:

The successful candidate will have:

  • A tertiary qualification (or equivalent) in music
  • Demonstrable project-management skills, working to defined budgets and schedules
  • Experience of editing and proof-reading music, both standard and non-standard notation
  • An extensive knowledge of and affinity for contemporary music and an awareness of requirements and expectations of performers
  • Computer literacy (Microsoft Office and Sibelius and/or Finale essential; Adobe InDesign and Acrobat desirable)
  • Patience, diplomacy and tact
  • Time-management skills, flexibility and determination to achieve deadlines without compromising standards
  • Commercial acumen

The following skills would also be desirable:

  • Experience of print production (including commissioning music setters and briefing printers), and knowledge of different methods of printing
  • Practical experience of the contemporary music performance world, either as a performer or as a composer
  • Fluency in German
