Head of Business Development, Music

  • Employer Oxford University Press
  • Location Oxford
  • Application Deadline 13/07/2022

We have been a leading figure in publishing for more than 500 years. We have always been a forward-looking organization, maximizing the technology for the day, but the digital revolution is bringing enormous change, fast. That same spirit of adventure and entrepreneurialism is critical to our future success. In a fast-changing publishing landscape, OUP welcomes the inquisitive, the inventive, and the ambitious; people who challenge the conventional, and pioneer the possible.

We are looking for a driven, proactive and collaborative individual to lead the Business Development strategy and function within the Music Department in order to maximise global sales, commission, and licensing revenue, and long-term profitability.  This role is ideally suited to someone with a background in publishing sales, or rights and licensing, who is looking to contribute at a senior level to a fantastic Music team within a leading publisher, looking to the future and thinking creatively about the changes facing our industry.

Duties of the role will include:

  • Leading the implementation of the Business Development strategy in order to maximise revenue and surplus from sales, licensing, and commission via new and existing revenue streams
  • Working to ensure that OUP IP and associated products, across frontlist, backlist, print, digital and audio, are growing in exposure, usage, reputation, revenue and market share
  • Working with your team to understand the potential value of different territories, channels and revenue streams and where best to invest effort in order to maximize income and profitability.
  • Setting clear performance indicators and activity and revenue targets for all members of the team, tracking and improving the revenue and pipeline performance of the team
  • Managing the sales aspect of the relationship with the ABRSM (the exam board of the Royal Schools of Music) to support the relationship and ensure that it remains strong, that sales are achieved, and that opportunities for growth are realised.
  • Recruiting, training, motivating and managing the Business Development team so that individual and team performance meets and exceeds expectations
  • Working with the Director of Music Publishing to set and monitor Business Development revenue and expenditure budgets
  • Developing effective approaches for pricing and discounting based on data
  • Working as part of the Music Management team to influence departmental strategy towards the delivery of increased revenue and surplus, and to the smooth running of the department

We operate a hybrid working policy and expect this role to require approximately 2 days per month in the Oxford office.

You will have:

  • Strong experience at a senior level in a licensing or sales role – ideally within the music and/or publishing industry
  • The ability to embrace and drive change and anticipate changing market needs
  • Knowledge of classical (particularly choral) music and markets globally and associated income streams is highly desirable
  • Experience of working in a matrixed organisation
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Strong leadership skills coupled with a focus on team performance over individual
  • Proven strategic and analytical skills and financial acumen
  • Ability to read and interpret complex legal contracts
  • A highly self-motivated attitude, with strong negotiation and interpersonal skills

We care about work/life balance here at OUP. With this in mind we offer 25 days’ holiday that rises with service, plus bank holidays and Christmas closure (3-days) and a 35-hour working week. We are open to discussing flexibility in respect of working hours and the use of technology to support regular remote working, dependent on role. We also have a great variety of active employee networks and societies.

We help make your money go further by contributing to your pension up to 12%, offering loans and savings schemes through our partnership with Salary Finance, in addition to travel to work schemes and access to a wide range of local discounts.

This role comes with the added benefit of private medical insurance and a discretionary annual bonus or management bonus.
