MPA Graduate Certificate in Editorial & Production

We are delighted to announce that the MPA Graduate Certficate in Editorial & Production will be running again from September this year until February 2017. Applications are now open.

The MPA Graduate Certificate in Editorial & Production is the only course in the UK offering extended, specialist training in editorial and production for music publishing.

It has been designed by music publishers and is delivered through the Music Publishers Association (MPA).

The course tutors are some of the most highly experienced and respected people working in the field, including Elaine Gould (Senior New Music Editor, Faber Music) and Simon Mathews (Production Director and Deputy Head of Publishing, ABRSM).

This industry-approved qualification fills a perceived skills and training need that is not currently met by other training organisations.

It is a comprehensive, detailed course for those entering or furthering a career in the editorial and production areas of printed music publishing.

Elaine Gould has been senior new music editor at Faber Music since 1987, and has edited scores by Oliver Knussen, George Benjamin, Jonathan Harvey, Julian Anderson and Thomas Adès. Elaine has a keen interest in the communication of notation to the practising musician. Published in 2011, Elaine’s book Behind Bars: The Definitive Guide to Music Notation is a comprehensive reference resource for editors, copyists, type-setters, students and composers, and is the only substantial book of its kind to be published for 30 years. Endorsed by Simon Rattle, it has been received to considerable critical acclaim by the musical press, and has become a recommended text book for university composition courses.

 

Simon Mathews has worked in the production side of classical sheet music publishing for 32 years, starting at Boosey & Hawkes, then at Schott for nine years, and since 1995 at ABRSM Publishing as production manager and then production director from 2003. At ABRSM Simon and his team are responsible for the production and manufacture of a wide range of products, from instrumental exam pieces and recordings to scholarly editions (eg. a new edition of Beethoven Piano Sonatas), to syllabuses and advertising material. Simon is currently chair of the Board of Trustees of Brighton Early Music Festival and is also a keen madrigal singer and player of baroque flute and harpsichord.
