Let’s Celebrate South Asian Heritage Month

Monday 18 July to Wednesday 17 August 2022

Background
South Asian Heritage Month originates from a cup of chai (tea) in December 2018.   The concept of the Month was inspired by Black History Month and other awareness months. It is an opportunity to learn more about the achievements and contributions of British Asians of Asian heritage who have made a contribution to the growth and development of Britain.

Theme for this year
The theme for the month is “Journeys of Empire” the 75th anniversary of the independence of India’s partition.  Partition saw the creation of East and West Pakistan. This year will also be the 50th anniversary since the expulsion of 28,000 Ugandan Asians from Uganda to the UK.

The month begins on 18th July, the date that the Indian Independence Act 1947 gained royal assent from King George VI.  It ends on the 17th August, the date that the Radcliffe Line was published in 1947, which set out where the border between India, West Pakistan and East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) would be.

Bhutan, South India, Maldives, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan – Each of these countries has been impacted by its relationship with Britain through war, colonisation, and ultimately via the British Empire.

The motto for this year’s South Asian Heritage Month is “Celebrate, Commemorate, Educate?”
The motto aims to look at how people connect with South Asian culture and identity through the celebration of arts, culture and heritage, South Asian history, and education.

The month is also a reminder for everyone to come together to combat anti-Asian racism and discrimination.
