International Women’s Day message from our CEO and Head of Diversity, Equality and Inclusion

Over the last 20 years, we have witnessed a substantial and welcomed positive change in both women’s and society’s consciousness of women’s equality and liberation. In business, we now have more women in senior leadership positions, in boardrooms and, increased visibility of women being impressive role models in every aspect of life.

Today, some women have choices.

We have made good progress within our sector too. In 2019, Women In CTRL conducted an analysis of the Board make-up of 12 key UK music industry trade organisations. The results exposed a lack of diversity within these organisations. However, a year later when Women in CTRL repeated their analysis, all 12 organisations had committed to and made, substantial progress. Across all 12 organisations, an average of 42% of Board members were women, an increase from 34% in 2020. In 2021, 27% of Chairs were women, a very significant increase from 9% in 2020.

All this is a great reason to celebrate progress against imbalance but, we must remind ourselves that even though the average number of black women board members has increased from 5 to 11 in 2021, there are still no black female CEOs or Chairs. There is still a clear lack of black, Asian and minority ethnic women, disabled women and trans women in senior leadership positions. A generation of talented and highly experienced women are leaving the workforce due to the lack of support afforded to them at work whilst going through the menopause.

As we celebrate Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day, let us acknowledge the contributions, achievements, and leaders and remember the sacrifices made by women to help make the world a more inclusive place. The world would be very different without their contribution. Businesses with women in leadership are proven to do better*.

So, please join us as we #BreakTheBias and celebrate the ongoing drive for equality hailed by Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day.
