Robert Neri, Champion for Respect and COO at Utopia Music
Our new MPA Respect Employee Network is focused on race and ethnicity. The vision for our sector is to ensure the true representation of Black, Asian and minority ethnic individuals at all levels of the business, especially at senior management and executive levels.
Our Respect Employee Network will be a safe place for members of it to discuss topics, share best practices, share experiences and concerns, celebrate events, raise awareness on race and ethnicity matters and to provide feedback to the MPA Head of DEI and the Champion of Respect. All of this engagement and input will help the MPA positively influence the Music Publishing Sector’s awareness and strategies to assure a safe, welcoming, well-maintained and inclusive industry in which to work.
Introducing Roberto Neri….
I am Roberto Neri and I am Chief Operating Officer at Utopia Music and Chair of the MPA. I have worked in the Music Business for over 20 years and I am proud to have worked with such amazing creative talent and executives across the globe. The reason for me wanting to support the Respect Employee Network is because I have been listening to and been inspired by Black Music from a very early age. My favourite artist of all time is the late Prince, followed by Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis to Kano, Ghetts and Jay Z today. I’ve always looked around the rooms of the music publishing sector and wondered why executives didn’t reflect the look of the artists and creators we all love. When George Floyd passed, the music industry paused and all of a sudden we could talk about this inadequacy. Diversity, equity and inclusion had finally become a priority and for the last 2 years I have ensured it has remained as the No.1 agenda item at the MPA Board. It’s standing as a top priority strategic agenda issue will remain and the whole of the MPA is committed to leading positive change.
With the help of the MPA’s Head of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Helen Choudhury, I am looking forward to discussing with the membership how we can make a difference. Accepting the privilege some of us have had and opening doors that may not have been open for others before. The music publishing sector is a great sector, with hard-working and caring people. I look forward to working with you and introducing you to our amazing community.
