Composers: Who needs them?

Location: London
Date: Wednesday 8 October 2008

Do we need more new music?
What do composers do?
How do they earn a living?
What place do they have in our society?
What more could they do for us?

A major conference on the role of the contemporary composer looks at these questions and more. Aimed at politicians, civil servants, broadcasters and journalists, professional musicians, educationalists and of course composers, the debate will attempt to raise the profile of the classically-trained composer working in concert, educational, theatre and media music; to understand and explore the professional and economic circumstances of composers earning a living from their craft; and to generate awareness of the place of new music in our community and what more could be done.

The conference will take place at the Royal Over-Seas League situated in Park Place, off St James’s Street.

Standard registration (including refreshments and lunch) costs £35. Liverymen, Freemen and Yeomen of the The Worshipful Company of Musicians and members of BAC&S receive a discounted price of £20.
